Why would a Dramata like a jellyfish? Debunking some of the arguments against Lina/Gourry
There's plenty of arguments levied by fans against the Lina/Gourry pairing. Some of the most popular pairings is for Lina to be with Zelgadiss or Xelloss. This section, and the next, discusses some of those arguments. It's not meant to be character or pairing bashing in any way - I'm very fond of both Zelgadiss and Xelloss. What follows are some of the arguments brought up against the pairing:

I. Gourry's too stupid! Who'd want to be with such a idiot?
Probably the biggest argument against the Lina/Gourry pairing is that Gourry is essentially too stupid for Lina, which does have some basis if you're going by the anime. In it, the comedy is taken up a few notches and Gourry's intellect is sacrificed because of it.

One very good example takes place not long after Lina and Gourry first meet. Gourry comments on Lina being a sorceress and says that he initially thought she was a waitress or fish seller. Lina thinks he's a complete idiot for believing that she was either of those and points out her outfit to indicate that she is indeed a sorceress. The matter ends there in the anime and you're left with the impression that Gourry doesn't know the difference between a waitress and a sorceress.

In the novels, almost the exact scene takes place, but then it keeps going:

"Relax," Gourry said, "I'm just kidding. I didn't think you were a fishmonger. I got you pretty good though..."
– Slayers vol. 1: "The Ruby Eye," page 40

Gourry then goes onto ask Lina how good of a sorceress she is. He even says that she looks like she has the ability to use Black Magic. At this point, he's not seen her perform any magic outside of a basic fishing spell, so he doesn't know she can cast the Dragon Slave. This exchange between them does point out two very important things about Gourry's character that escapes the transition from novel to anime:

1) Gourry has a very deadpan sense of humor. The above joke involving Lina's profession is the first of many times he pulls on her throughout the series and it indicates that he is very much aware of his own cluelessness and uses it to his advantage. He does it time and time again, and it's shown in some of the earlier excerpts from the novels such as when Gourry gives Lina his version of CPR in the second novel.

2) Gourry is not as dumb as people portray him to be. He immediately demonstrates a knowledge of magic, some of the spells and the classes of magic. He will never be the intellectual that Zelgadiss is, his mind is like a mesh sieve, but he's not dumber than dirt. When Lina tells Gourry about the legend of Shabranigdu, he is able to grasp what Rezo was trying to tell them regarding Zelgadiss (even though it turned out not to be true.)

In Slayers, Gourry serves as a device to educate the reader on the background they need to know to understand the story. The novels are told in the first person through Lina's point of view. Like the reader, Gourry enters Lina's life at the very beginning of the series and it's through his very basic questions regarding what Lina considers to be common knowledge that we learn what Lina does. Gourry is used in this way throughout both the novels and the anime. His function in this role isn't utilized much in the manga. These "jellyfish moments" are counterbalanced by Gourry showing his intelligence and while Lina is exasperated by what she considers is Gourry's lack of knowledge, she does take the time to explain things to him.

II. What about Sylphiel? Doesn't she love Gourry? What a lovely pairing!
There's no mistake that Sylphiel has some amount of feelings for Gourry and it's obvious that she is quite infatuated with him. She does her best to make sure she has time alone with him and to also clarify Lina's intentions toward him.

But the key to the relationship is the return of said feelings. In the novels, Gourry spends most of the third novel acting really cold toward Sylphiel. His interaction with her indicates that they have some sort of a shared past, but Gourry does not elaborate to Lina what that past was beyond the absolute basics - that he'd been there and was involved in a sticky situation. He was resistant to going to Sairaag to begin with, but he really had no choice.

While Sylphiel's focus is on Gourry, his is strictly on Lina. As cited earlier in the essay, Gourry silently seeks out Lina's approval before he leaves with Sylphiel to find the Blessed Blade. He keeps reassuring Lina and gives her a clumsy wink before he goes off with Sylphiel. It's obvious that he's not comfortable leaving Lina behind. After Lina is attacked, Gourry's focus is completely on her and they share a tender moment.

This scene is the parallel to Lina being mortally wounded in the anime. In that version of the events, Copy Rezo attacks Sylphiel and Lina takes the attack that's meant for her. Gourry completely loses it. He stumbles across the battlefield screaming Lina's name and is nearly inconsolable.

Sylphiel's appearance in the anime is the signal in that canon that Lina and Gourry might be developing something beyond friendship. It's the first time that Lina's been challenged on her friendship with Gourry and she also experiences jealously over Sylphiel and Gourry interacting. Gourry is a lot warmer toward Sylphiel in the anime, and tends to remember her just for her cooking whereas you get hints there was something more in the novels. But it's that battle and Gourry completely losing his composure that lets the viewer know that at least from Gourry's end, the friendship is turning into something else.

However, Gourry interacts with Sylphiel very little from this point on in the anime. When he is freed from Phibrizzo's hold at the end of Slayers Next, Gourry isn't even really aware that Sylphiel is there - even though Sylphiel has gone to the trouble to learn the Dragon Slave and to use anything, even sex appeal, in the effort to save him. Gourry's focus is entirely on the Lord of Nightmares and his desire to get Lina back to his side. After that is done, he's not shown interacting with Sylphiel except as a group. After Slayers Next and the eighth novel, we do not hear from Sylphiel again.

III. Isn't Lina only with Gourry for the Sword of Light?
If this was the case, why is she still with him? There's plenty of post-Sword of Light material out there now to completely refute what Lina originally said. Her original statement at the end of the first novel can be taken at face value - but it was also made when she barely knew Gourry. When Sylphiel challenges Lina on that statement in the eighth novel/Slayers Next, Lina has known Gourry for roughly 18 months. She's experienced and is struggling with the very strong emotions that she has for him. She's not the type of person to just blurt out her very private emotions toward someone else, especially since she is aware that Sylphiel is in love with Gourry herself. So Lina falls back on that defense mechanism of the Sword of Light. It's an easy thing to say and given her personality also in character. But she's more hesitant about her response the second time around than the first.

A good chunk of the second arc of the novels revolves around the quest to find Gourry a new sword. Lina obviously feels that Gourry is worth more than just his sword when she spends her time and her money, two very precious commodities for her, to acquire one for him. It's indicated that Lina paid for the sword Gourry uses until the Blast Sword is discovered. For someone who once commented that her parents gave her a huge sense of fiscal responsibility, it shows that Lina is considering that her money is now Gourry's as well.

Lina and Gourry are also still together in the Knight of Aqualord manga. A subtle jab is given to the whole debate when Lina says that she's going to leave Gourry - but it turns out that she's only mad because Gourry ate the last of the beef jerky. It's clear that Gourry no longer has the Sword of Light, yet Lina still wants to be with him and they grow closer throughout the manga.

IV. I think Lina would be better with Zelgadiss. They're an intellectual match!
Just because Lina and Zel are an intellectual match doesn't mean that they would be a good romantic match. It's easy to see how they would be good together. Lina arguably spends more of the early part of the series with Zelgadiss than Gourry after she's kidnapped. Even Gourry has thought that Lina had a crush on Zelgadiss toward the end of the first novel.

However, both Lina and Zelgadiss have two very different goals. Lina's on a constant quest to pursue knowledge and power. Zelgadiss is on a quest for his cure. Yes, in the anime, Lina said that she was helping to look for the Claire Bible to help out Zelgadiss. But it was also for her own purposes as well. Zelgadiss's cure would be a bonus, a fortunate side effect to finding it. In the end though, Lina was the one who wound up benefitting from the Claire Bible's knowledge. In the novels, Zel's cure isn't an issue during the search. [livejournal.com profile] maddy02 also pointed out that Zel's angsty nature would wear on Lina pretty fast. She likes to boldly march down the street, not stick to the shadows.

V. I think Lina would be better with Xelloss. They flirt all the time! Just look at the sexual tension!
Yes, Xelloss does flirt with Lina quite a bit, especially in the anime. In the novels, Lina is the first to confront Xelloss with the knowledge that he's a Mazoku. Xelloss respects Lina as much as a Mazoku can respect anyone. However, he's made it very clear that his loyalty first and foremost is to Zelas Metallium. In Slayers Try, Xelloss tells Valgaav that he would kill Lina personally if Valgaav chose to come to the Mazoku side. Xelloss freely admits this to Lina and she replies that they mutually use each other for information, etc.

As [livejournal.com profile] anna_nimmie_tee points out, Xelloss has a habit of not being around when Lina needs him the most. Lina often comments on this, growing angry when Xelloss disappears during the height of action. By contrast, Gourry has consistently materialized when Lina has needed him most. If they are separated, Gourry usually enters the scene right when Lina's in an extremely dire situtation.

One of the biggest arguments against Lina being with both Zelgadiss and Xelloss comes thanks to Knight of Aqualord. In that series, where Lina makes several huge leaps in her romantic relationship with Gourry, neither character appears.

VI. Lina beats up Gourry all the time. Why would he be with someone who abuses him rather than Sylphiel, who would respect him?
There are two things in the series that are emphasized for comedic effect - Lina smacking Gourry around and Gourry teasing Lina over a certain lack of assets regarding her chest. Slayers is first and foremost a fantasy series. But in a secondary sense, especially the anime, Slayers is a comedy. Knocking the straight man of a comedic pairing is an old technique and you can see it when you view old-time comedy routines from the Three Stooges and other groups of that era. This is also seen in other anime and manga series. One of the controversial parts of the Inuyasha series among some fans is Kagome's use of prayer beads on Inuyasha. When he goes out of control, Kagome shouts the words "Osuwari" (or "Sit boy!") and Inuyasha is slammed face-first into the ground. It hurts a hell of a lot more than Lina smacking Gourry with a slipper, but the element was introduced as an act of comedy. In the manga, as both Inuyasha and Kagome have grown as characters and have learned to express their feelings for each other, Kagome uses the prayer beads less and less until they're mainly used in comedy moments involving Kouga.

Lina's smacking Gourry around is greatly emphasized in the anime because that medium has a greater emphasis on the comedy. A good example of how this technique is used in the novels is during the fifth novel. Lina, Amelia, Zelgadiss and Xelloss were involved in a huge fight and were in pretty dire straits when Gourry, who'd been missing for a good chunk of the book, suddenly shows up and saves them. At the end, Gourry goes over to greet Lina by ruffling her hair and she delivers an uppercut and starts to vent her anger (and worry) over where he'd been. That moment breaks the tension of the battle, but also reveals that Lina is more comfortable expressing herself physically. Throughout the book, Lina had expressed worry and guilt that she had to leave Gourry behind because her magic was sealed, but she's not the type of character to actually say those words. Gourry is the one who will reveal that he's scared in the times when Lina's life is in danger.

Gourry isn't completely without blame as well. In the radio drama that's an extra on the first Slayers TV soundtrack, Gourry smacks Lina when she goes completely out of control. He also gives her a knock on the head after she fakes her death in Slayers NEXT during the fight against Kanzeil. Gourry's better know for his teasing regarding Lina's breasts. The subject is brought up at different points in all three versions of canon at some point or another and it's a running gag. In Slayers NEXT, Xelloss utilizes this to get across the fact that Martina has placed a curse on Lina. He grabs Gourry's hand, thrusts it at Lina's breasts. Gourry clamps her breasts, thinks a moment and goes, "Hmmm....small." In response, Lina kicks him in the crotch. In the one-shot Rui Araizumi manga, Gourry wraps an arm around Lina from behind and squeezes her breasts while commenting over their lack of size.

So then why does Lina stick with Gourry if all of this takes place? First and foremost, she respects him and his ability as a swordsman, then he becomes her best friend. Lina is a talented thief and knows how to shake people loose. She spends a good bit of the Slayers Special series doing her best to get rid of Naga and finally does so not long before meeting Gourry. If Lina really wanted to, she could had just stolen the Sword of Light from Gourry and ran off with it. He'd probably never find her because she could use magic to help her get a good distance away before he realized it. While emphasis is placed on Lina's desire for the Sword of Light, it's apparent that she holds some amount of affection for its owner.

[livejournal.com profile] ichiban_victory pointed out that none of the other characters would let Lina get away with this on a consistent basis. Zelgadiss would grow angry and even Xelloss, who Lina beats up just as much as Gourry in the anime, would eventually just get sick of it. But [livejournal.com profile] yukinoomoni said it best when she mentioned that for Lina and Gourry, the violence is all foreplay anyhow!

Why they work: Arguments for Lina/Gourry
I. They were literally made to be together.
Slayers creator Hajime Kanzaka stated in an interview that in the beginning, he didn't intend for Lina and Gourry to become involved romantically. However, by the end of the eighth novel, he says that both Lina and Gourry are in love with each other. These feelings aren't vocalized and the closest they get to it in the novel timeline is Lina believing that Gourry is proposing to her at the end of the series. It's apparent that over the course of the series he grew comfortable with the idea of the Lina/Gourry pairing. He's written or has been heavily involved with all aspects of the franchise and wouldn't had approved such moves like the kiss in Slayers NEXT or had written the intimate moment between Lina and Gourry in Knight of Aqualord if he hadn't thought it in character for each of them. Gourry has also been in every Slayers story that's set in the time after Lina travels with Naga. Sylphiel, Zelgadiss and Xelloss all enter and exit the story at various points.

II. The sorceress and the swordsman. It's a pairing that works.
Lina and Gourry complement each other on the battlefield and it's not just her magic combined with his swordsmanship. On several occassions, they've demonstrated that they don't even need to communicate verbally to detail their battle plans. The biggest example of this is in Slayers NEXT when Lina and Gourry make one final attack against Mazenda. The two go rushing across the field toward her, with Lina shielding Gourry. Mazenda believes that Lina is trying to distract her so that Gourry can attack with the Sword of Light. Without saying any word in advance, Lina and Gourry switch weapons in midfield. Gourry attacks Mazenda with Lina's short sword. By the time Mazenda realizes this and gets over her shock, Lina has rushed around behind her and slashes through her with the Sword of Light, defeating her. It's a maneuver that couldn't be done without some form of close connection between the couple.

III. They balance each other out
It's not so much of opposites attract, but their personalities are complementary. They're not quite so different, but they're also not exactly the same. As [livejournal.com profile] yukinoomoni points out, Gourry teaches Lina how to be humble while Lina gives Gourry the chance to let loose his inhibitions. Throughout the series, Gourry has definitely been a calming presence - from grabbing Lina by the arms when she's really out of control to just placing a hand on her shoulder and mentioning a kind word. Gourry's parting words to Lina are usually a warning for her not to act rashly - he does this when going off with Sylphiel in the third novel and when she goes to the Tower of Wind in Knight of Aqualord. Gourry understands how Lina behaves. As [livejournal.com profile] peeperoonie suggested, Gourry gives Lina a kind of anchor that she didn't have when she traveled alone or with Naga. In return, Lina gives Gourry a purpose. Just before he met her, he was about to toss the Sword of Light away, but is stopped by a nameless stranger (who's actually Lina's father.) The stranger urges Gourry to find a purpose for his sword, to find someone to protect. Days later Gourry stumbles across Lina surrounded by bandits. He thinks she can take care of herself, but if he could help her out just a little, then it would be worthwhile.

IV. Gourry is the only character in the series that makes any emotional demands from Lina.
We see Lina interact with a lot of people in Slayers, but Gourry is the only one who makes any emotional demands from Lina and argues with her about her safety. In Slayers NEXT, Lina fakes her death during the second Seigram fight above Saillune so that she could get into a better position to cast a Dragon Slave. When her ruse is revealed, Gourry cuffs Lina on the head and asks her to consider his feelings the next time she does that. Lina actually grows remorseful at this point and does something that she very rarely does - she apologizes.

In Knight of Aqualord, the group discovers that Lina must travel to the Tower of Wind to speak with Airlord, however the priestess willing to send them, Oren, receives news that her village is under attack. The group struggles with what to do, but Gourry is the one to stand up and say that their job is to protect Oren's village and Lina is the one to travel to see Airlord. Amelia and Shizuri, an illusionist with the party, quickly side with Gourry. Gourry then puts his hands on Lina's shoulders and apologizes for not being able to go with her, that he feels like he should as her protector. Then he asks her to come back to him when she's done and they embrace.

In the novels, Lina makes causal observations about Gourry's behavior at certain times. In "Vezendi's Shadow," Lina makes remarks about how Gourry is unusually tight-lipped and appears stressed. What escapes Lina during this is that Gourry gets this way whenever Lina's life is gravely in danger...well, in more danger than usual. In the fourth novel, Lina nearly had her throat slit by Seigram in her room and it was only through Gourry realizing that something is wrong that he breaks down the door and saves her. After a second battle involving a giant beetle that nearly kills Lina, she and Gourry fight because he wants her to give up their assignment. In the sixth novel, Lina and Gourry have gone out to get her new shoulder guards and when Lina finally prods Gourry into talking, he only tells her in a tight voice what her major weakness is as a swordsman. Neither of them elaborate on the situation further, but it's shown that Gourry has a habit of becoming extremely stressed the more danger Lina's in. This is a trait not seen in the anime or manga. There's even more subtle signs. After Lina is gravely injured fighting Copy Rezo, Gourry tells Lina that he was worried about her, but does so in a soft voice. Lina doesn't elaborate, but the accompanying picture shows an extremely anxious Gourry looking down at her.

V. Gourry is Lina's primary source of emotional support.
Gourry is also the character that Lina turns to when she needs reassurance. In Slayers NEXT, Slayers TRY and Knight of Aqualord, Lina questions whether or not she is doing the right thing and Gourry is always the one to reassure her that she is. He seems to be remarkably in tune to her emotions and always gives her a smile when he does so. He reassures Lina in TRY and Aqualord that they had survived worse battles and are sure to do so again.

Another consistent event in the three versions of canon is what the lack of having Gourry around does to Lina. After Hellmaster Phibrizzo kidnaps Gourry, Lina has a visible reaction in all three mediums. In the anime, she runs screaming after Gourry, only to be betrayed by her own body when the aftereffects of casting the Ragna Blade twice in a short amount of time catch up to her. The next day, Lina wakes up and remembers that Gourry is gone and starts to cry. It's one of the few times in the series where she geninuely cries. In the manga, Lina wakes up with tears in her eyes when she realizes that Gourry isn't there. She is disoriented and falls down the stairs. In the novels, the existing summaries do not elaborate on her immediate reaction to Gourry's kidnapping.

In all three mediums, Gourry has emphasized that he will remain by Lina's side for the rest of his life. Lina reacts to this with stunned disbelief, she believes he's just saying the first thing that comes to mind again. But Lina also has faith that even if Gourry isn't with her at that particular moment, he'll be with her again. Even at the very beginning of the series when Lina hasn't known Gourry for very long, she knows that he'll do what it takes to get back to her side after she's kidnapped by Zelgadiss.

In Knight of Aqualord, Lina and Gourry are separated during the first chapter after a battle at sea. After Lina is discovered by Lyos, she has a moment at the end of the second chapter where she realizes that she doesn't know where Gourry is. But, she also feels that he is okay and that he could take care of himself. While that might be interpreted as being rather cold in one sense, in another it shows Lina's faith in Gourry and faith in the fact that they will meet up again. They finally do so in the fifth chapter.

They are also the only ones who have interacted intimately with touch. In the anime, Lina leans against Gourry's shoulder as he sleeps in the pocket dimension that houses the Claire Bible. Lina and Gourry have embraced several times. In the fourth novel, Gourry holds Lina after her throat is nearly slit and she buries her face in his chest. In Slayers NEXT, they hug in the Sea of Chaos after the Lord of Nightmares restores Lina to her body. They also kiss during this time. In Knight of Aqualord, they embrace before Lina heads to the Tower of Wind.

VI. Amelia supports it, and you should too!
The Lina/Gourry pairing is also supported in the series by other characters. One of the classic exchanges from the sixth novel has Lina asking Gourry for private sword lessons.

After a few minutes of silent eating - well, silent except for the loud scarfing noises - I looked over at Gourry. There was something I'd been meaning to talk to him about.
"Gourry?" I asked, hoping I could get his attention.
"Mm?" he mumbled, slurping from his plate of pasta.
Just say it, Lina. Since when does he ever pay attention?
"Actually," I began, then paused. "I'd like you to, well...keep me company tonight."
I heard a couple of utensils drop onto plates. Amelia gasped. "Miss Lina!" she cried. "That's very...direct of you!"
"Ah," Xelloss sighed, his smile taking on entirely new levels of creepy. "It seems that spring has finally arrived."
I spat out my stew. "Hey!" I choked as I wiped my mouth. "That's NOT what I meant!" I whipped my head to Gourry, but he'd already gone flush. "Why are you blushing?" I shrieked.
"Uh..." Gourry scratched his head uncomfortably. "Well, when a man and a woman love each other very-"
"NO!" I made sure to cut him off before he said ANOTHER WORD. "I meant I wanted to get in some extra sword practice! What is wrong with all of you?!"
Amelia knitted her brow in puzzlement. "Huh?"
Xelloss raised an eyebrow. "Non-euphemistic sword practice?"
"YES!"
Amelia and Xelloss exchanged disappointed glances.
– Slayers vol. 6: "Vezendi's Shadow"

In the fifth novel, Amelia scolds Lina after the group is reunited with Gourry and tells them that it's not time for a lover's quarrel. She is by far the most vocal supporter of the couple in the series and I've often joked that Lina/Gourry is Amelia's OTP. Amelia constantly worries over Lina's reaction to Sylphiel. In Slayers NEXT, she grows panicked when Xelloss kisses Lina on the cheek and looks to make sure that Gourry didn't notice it. In Knight of Aqualord, Amelia is the one to explain to Shizuri and Lyos the circumstances regarding Lina and Gourry's growing relationship, saying that they're the strongest couple in the world, but they're slow to recognize their love for each other.

Other characters have automatically assumed the two were lovers, such as Shizuri. Zelgadiss even throws in his own support when he tells Lina and Gourry at the beginning of Slayers TRY that they hadn't changed and he couldn't imagine the two of them ever not being happy.

VII. Speakings of the anime, how about that kiss?
Even though the focus of this essay isn't on the anime, it's hard to do any sort of shipping essay without mentioning the final arc of Slayers NEXT and I felt that it would make a good conclusion to the analysis section. There isn't anything quite like that in either the novels or the manga, but there are some scenes that come pretty close.

"I'll defend you forever..."
Gourry has told Lina that he intends to remain by her side for the rest of her life. At this point, while I'm not sure he says this during the seventh or eighth novels, he does say this in the one-shot Araizumi manga, which I include in the novel canon. These chapters were published alongside the original novel chapters in Gekkan Dragon Magazine. In the two-part story, "Target: Gourry," a noblewoman named Isabelle wants Gourry to leave Lina and join her guards. Gourry refuses to do so. Lina jokingly asks Gourry if he plans to stay with her for the rest of her life and he says yes. Lina refuses to believe it.

In the seventh volume of the manga, Gourry is finally alone with Lina for the first time in awhile. He says that he wishes they could always be like this, which stuns her.

Giving up the Sword of Light
In the novels, Phibrizzo simply takes the Sword of Light. It has nothing to do with Gourry's feelings for Lina and vice versa. In the manga version of the events (which came years after the Slayers Next anime), Gourry speaks to the Lord of Nightmares and gives up his sword in exchange for getting Lina back. He doesn't go into the Sea of Chaos, he does this with Zelgadiss, Amelia and Sylphiel all present. The sword disappears and Lina reappears. She rushes into Gourry's arms, crying and babbling about how he shouldn't had given up the sword for her. Gourry hugs her and is just excited to see her.

One thing is consistent though - the events surrounding the Hellmaster Phibrizzo battle show that Lina and Gourry have grown extremely close to each other. They are willing to give up their lives and what they cherish most so that the other could live. After seeing that depth of emotion toward each other, it's hard to see them with anyone else.
