The most EVIL day of the year

Oh!!!! I forgot! It's February! Only 26 more shopping days left until my birthday. ::wicked grin::
AND....it's that time of year again! YES!! It is time to denounce the most horrific, most evil, the absolute worst holiday on the face of the planet - VALENTINE’S DAY!!!
Join me, a single woman, and all other singles as we crusade against this highly-commercialized holiday that never fails to rub our singleness in our faces, then proceeds to try and comfort it with loads of chocolate.
I kid you not, I have a great loathing for Valentine's Day. Because I know what will happen each and every year. I will sit at home feeling absolutely horrible while couples galore go out and kiss, snuggle, hug, etc. - all the other things that are associated with Valentine's Day. Nothing good has EVER come out of it, except for the times my mother gave me a stuffed animal and
caligogreywings gave me a rose. I still have it. Granted, there was two Valentine's Days that I actually had a boyfriend. Even then, I seriously disliked the holiday.
Why?
Why do we need a day set aside to tell someone that we love them? Why do we need to dedicate a day to sending flowers and other surprises to spouses and other loved ones when we should be doing so every day, or at least as often as possible.
Valentine's Day is a mechanized holiday generated to create additional retail revenue. While it's suppose to be romantic, I think it fizzles. When I am lucky enough to get a boyfriend (ohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseletmefindonebeforeI’m30), I'm not going to insist we celebrate Valentine's Day. If we do, that's fine. But I don't want it to be a big deal. I will do my best to let him know the other 364/365 days of the year how much I care for him.
Oh, and what is the most romantic day of the year in my opinion? Christmas Eve.
And
ely_chan, I need to get my hands on that anti-Valentine's Day column I wrote for the CW a few years ago. I think folks would enjoy reading it here.
