Book covers

savvyliterateLast night, I was going through a bunch of old notebooks, discarding homework assignments from ninth grade and other stuff that I’d kept for years and never quite understood why.
The last thing in one of my notebooks was two very old bookcovers that I had paintakingly sliced and used to adorn two notebooks. One was for SeaQuest DSV and the other Earth 2, both started around the time Babylon 5 hit the airwaves. All the girls loved Jonathan Brandis, who played Lucas on SeaQuest
I enjoyed both of these shows, watched both with my family and dissected them with friends in junior high school. B5, Dr. Quinn, SeaQuest and Earth 2 made up most of the conversation during my eighth- and ninth-grade years. I sat studying the covers, trying to see if I could remember the plots to the two series. I couldn’t. I tried to rationalize keeping them. They evoked warm, fuzzy memories of my family and friends - of me finally learning self-confidence in eighth grade, but other than that I really didn’t need them. I placed them in the trash pile.
While reading CNN.com this morning, I discovered that Jonathan Brandis died a few days ago.
Suddenly, I feel like a large part of my early teen years has been sucked away. What’s even sadder - he was only four years older than me.
Maybe I’ll save those covers after all.
