Story #33: “Above the Thunder”
The summer storm came upon them in the absolute worst location possible - about two miles from the closest town and very few trees under which to take cover.
If there was one thing that Lina hated just as much as snow, it was rain. Sure, a light pattering of rain to momentarily break the humidity wasn't bad, but in certain climates it would only make the weather even more humid and muggy. They were traveling through one of those climates now, near the ocean that would lead to the lands beyond the barrier.
So now here she was, taking shelter under one of the few trees on the road with Gourry crouching beside her. They held her cloak over their heads, because it was somewhat waterproofed and would keep the worst of the rain off their faces. It didn't keep them both from getting soaked.
Lina stared at the weather with a mournful expression, not anticipating the walk into town at all. The water had soaked through to her skin, making it cold and clammy and her clothes uncomfortable. Her hair hung in long, wet hanks that would be murderous to untangle. There was even water in her boots, squishing up around her toes. Their bag of belongings that Gourry carried was also wet, which meant that any dry clothes was at least a few hours away from reality.
They stood in silence - Lina observing the weather and Gourry … she turned her head slightly to see that he was fixated on something on the ground. His eyes were wide, somewhat glassy, and he was blushing. Her brow furrowed and she stared at their feet. There was nothing but mud, their worn boots and the puddle of water forming around them.
"Just what are you looking at?" she demanded and he suddenly jumped like a rabbit, nearly tumbling backwards and pulling the cloak off of them. He regained his footing and resumed his hunched position.
"I wasn't looking at anything," he stammered and her eyes narrowed at him.
"Well, hold still, otherwise it's only going to get worse." She grabbed his left arm for balance as she hoisted the cloak a bit higher.
"Right," he agreed.
They fell into silence once more, but this one was accompanied by the feeling that they were being watched very intensely. Suddenly wary, Lina surveyed the road and preparing for an attack. The feeling wasn't negative, not like the aura she could normally sense before a battle. Still, she felt nervous and a bit fidgety. She wished the rain would just hurry it up, or even die down to a sprinkle so they could splash their way into town.
She thought Gourry would comment on it, for his senses were nearly superhuman when it came to this sort of thing. But, he was very quiet, and when she glanced at him, she noticed he was staring toward the ground again and blushing.
She glanced down again and then she saw it. The rain and cold had caused her clothes to plaster against her skin and for her breasts to swell. Her nipples, now quite visible, pushed against the yellow band binding her chest. She closed her eyes, growling under her breath. Here she was, worrying about being attack and Gourry was ogling her breasts.
Because she didn't know how else to take it, her fist found Gourry's stomach and the resulting punch had him flying out into the storm.
Sadly, the cloak went with him and landed in the mud.
Lina loomed over him, hands on her hips and furious. "Just what the hell did you think you were doing?" she demanded.
"I wasn't looking at anything!" Gourry cried out and her eyes narrowed.
"You weren't looking at anything? You mean your eyes didn't happen to be magically drawn to my chest for the past 20 minutes?"
"Thirty minutes … and they were there!"
Rolling her eyes, Lina snatched up her cloak and started off toward town, not particularly caring if Gourry followed her or not. No reason to try to seek shelter now. Lina glanced down at her chest. It did appear bigger, but she knew it was an illusion. Once she warmed up, it would return to the pancake size it always was.
Still … a smile tugged at her lips … it was nice to be ogled for once.
And she never knew that Gourry spent the rest of the walk staring at her rear.
