Pairing/Characters: Doctor/River, Kahler Jex, Isaac, the Gunslinger, Amy and Rory
Notes: This is a "what if?" rewrite. What if River had been the companion for "A Town Called Mercy" instead of Amy and Rory? What would have changed? This was brought on by a discussion with Charina over chat, and this entire story poured out in a couple of hours.
All recognizable dialogue comes from the episode itself, using the following transcript and should be credited to Toby Whithouse. I just played around with it.
The story title comes from season one of Babylon 5, but originally comes from "The Merchant of Venice."
Summary: It was one of those trips the Doctor liked to take with River when her parents were either at home or sleeping on the TARDIS. In this case, it was sleeping. He had picked up her up from Stormcage with the promise of attending the Day of the Dead festival in 1895, before taking the Ponds out for breakfast. But, he had gotten toast crumbs on the console, and here was where they landed.
