Mwhaha. Thanks to some excellent instructions from the Semagic site, I now have Semagic running on my Mac via Wine/PlayOnMac! Want to give it a shot? Here's the instructions. (I'm specifically thinking of you, [livejournal.com profile] the_sweet)

I've been giving a lot of thought to what's going in my body and the products I'm bringing into the home. I've always been somewhat environmentally conscious, ever since I did a story in 2004 on organic beef and other food products. I don't use plastic cups any longer, and the one plastic water bottle I have is BPA-free. I do have a few plastic containers, mainly for lunch. I look at them and wonder what sort of chemicals are leeching out of there. I have Ziploc bags, but it takes me forever to go through a box. Seriously, last box I had lasted me from late 2004 to 2009. I try to eat organic foods and have considered going vegetarian, but I do love my chicken, fish and ocassional hamburger.

The changes to a more eco-friendly home have been in small steps. I've been using Seventh Generation laundry products since 2005. More often than not, I do not purchase water, and when I do, I reuse the bottles. I tend to not use disposable plates at home, and I'll wash and reuse a few times if I do. I use the eco-friendly light bulbs, reusable grocery bags, recycle everything I can and bought a stainless steel coffee mug and a tea infuser mug -- though I need to be better about taking those with me/keeping them clean! My bags are purchased from Tom Bihn, which makes its products in the U.S., etc.

But, looking at some much-needed organization stuff at Bed, Bath and Beyond today, it just gets me how much crappily made plastic and cheap wire stuff is out there. I wound up picking up a couple of Lunchbots from Wegmans and a container of unbleached paper bags for sandwiches and chips and donating the last of the Ziploc bags to work. I really like Lunchskins, but Wegmans doesn't carry them, so I at least got the environmentally friendly paper bags. I searched online and found some bamboo organizers that looks pretty sturdy, so I'll either use it or go back to BB&B for the cast-iron one. The rest of my plastic containers, such as the ones from IKEA I'm pretty sure aren't BPA-free, will be donated to Goodwill.

If you got all the way to the end of my somewhat eco-friendly rambling, now here's the good news -- I called the National Visa Center this morning and was told all of Mike's paperwork was approved, and he's in line to be scheduled for an interview! All of the interviews for November are scheduled the second week of October, so we'll know then if he'll get to interview in November. *boogies* We're almost done, folks!
