Oh wow. So, "The Doctor's Wife" is amazing. There was a review about it a week or so back saying that if you planned on introducing the series to new fans, this would be the episode to show them. And, they're right. It's now one of my absolute favorite episodes in the series. I also had a giddy "Queen's Thief" moment as well during it, and parts of it also reminded me of a certain chapter of "Slayers: Knight of Aqualord."

Everything about it was really well done. The perfect actress was picked for Idris, and I pretty much loved everything that came out of her mouth -- including the biting and kissing! The way she bellowed for "Thieeeeeeeeeeeeef! Where's my thief?" reminded me so much of "Queen of Attolia" that I laughed. I bet Gaiman's read the series.

I also loved that Idris thought that Rory was "the pretty one," which was very cute. I love that Rory got an awesome chance to shine here. The scene where Amy kept running into the older/bitter/deader versions of Rory reminded me a lot of the chapter of "Knight of Aqualord" where Lina and Gourry are separated and visions of the person they love the most are twisted into their worse fears. In Lina's case, it was Gourry and Gourry acknowledged he saw Lina but knew it wasn't her. Likewise, as [livejournal.com profile] tempestas_inu reminds me, Rory didn't succumb to the visions that House projected just like Gourry didn't succumb to the Mazoku's visions in the forest. I love that Amy is continuing her trend of treating Rory well. I finally got through most of series 5, and overall I am liking Amy much better than I did before. But, her writing is still inconsistent - yet she was handled beautifully in "The Doctor's Wife."

The Doctor and Idris were so beautiful and perfect together. There's so much love and affection there, and it's the relationship between them that spans all the way back to "An Unearthly Child."

The Doctor: I don't understand. Who are you?
Idris: Do you really not know me? Just because they put me in here?
The Doctor: They said you were dangerous.
Idris: Not the cage, stupid. In here. They put me in here. I'm the... Oh, what do you call me? We travel. I go {she makes the TARDIS sound}.
The Doctor: The TARDIS?
Idris: Time and Relative Dimension in Space. Yes that's it. Names are funny. It's me. I'm the TARDIS.
The Doctor: No you're not! You're a bitey mad lady. The TARDIS is up-and-downy stuff in a big blue box.
Idris: Yes, that's me. A type 40 TARDIS. I was already a museum piece when you were young. And the first time you touched my console, you said—
The Doctor: I said you were the most beautiful thing I'd ever known.
Idris: Then you stole me. And I stole you.
The Doctor: I borrowed you.
Idris: Borrowing implies the eventual intention to return the thing that was taken. What makes you think I would ever give you back?

I love how Idris thinks her name is "sexy." *snickers* And that the Doctor gave Amy and Rory bunk beds because he thought beds with ladders are cool. And it had this nice little tidbit at the end:

Rory: At the end, she was talking. She kept repeating something. I don't know what it meant.
The Doctor: What did she say?
Rory: "The only water in the forest is the river." She said we'd need to know it someday. It doesn't make sense, does it?
The Doctor: Not yet.
Doctor/River fans: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! *pumps fist*

This episode had a lot of heart, humor and emotion plus a good time spent in Nine/Ten's console room. Too bad it's been deleted ... for now. I'm sure the TARDIS restored it and the swimming pool. Not so sure about squash court 7. It's easily accessible for those who haven't seen the series before and want you to see more. It's everything I love best about Doctor Who. It's a fairytale about the boy and the box he stole, going off to see the universe and have madcap adventures together.

Mike said his new favorite ship is Rory/TARDIS and he loved the episode. Mike loved the episode. The only reason the boy watches Doctor Who to begin with is because I do and he loves lording it over me that he can see it hours before I can.
