A good week
While at work last night, I looked up at my monitor at work and suddenly felt sad.
It's been a really hard 10 days emotionally. There's been the flood, then the 9/11 anniversary which I couldn't avoid because of my job. That went along with hours of OT. We're having issues with Mike's immigration that I will sit down and vent about because the government is driving us both up the friggin' wall. I'm losing a friendship I've had for years, and just thinking about it makes me angry and sad at times. Finally, Thursday night marked three years since the incident at the Daily Star. At the time, I was pretty damn sure that I didn't have a future in newspapers.
Funny how time changes. This week, I had one of the top newspaper fronts in the country. People are still congratulating me about it, and they've hung it up on the wall as you go into the newsroom. I'm really proud of all of at the Patriot News. All the flood fronts done by a co-worker are up there and the cover of our 9/11 special section. The cover I did can be seen here. It really is one of the best pieces I've ever done. If you'd asked me three years ago if I'd even had the chance to do this, I'd not believed you.
I brought a proof of today's front page to one of the sports copy editors while I was feeling down and he commented he liked what I did with the flag. Then he goes, "You've had a great week, little one," and told me how proud of the paper he was because of some of the work I did.
I nearly bawled, but instead I smiled, and I wasn't so sad anymore. I went back to my desk to discover a lot of nice messages on Twitter and comfort from Isa, and while it wasn't a real hug, the virtual comfort was the next best thing. The copy editor was right. It really has been a great week with my work. I'm not who I was three years ago, and that's a very good thing indeed.
I also discovered that a former co-worker from Bristol is now a bestselling author. That's awesome! I knew she was a writer, and she had a column on our features front at the time, but I didn't realize she wrote books. She writes urban fantasy, and you can see her work here. I dropped her a message on Twitter to congratulate her, and she did remember me. I'll have to check them out sometime.
