LJ's woes

savvyliterate: (Lina: Facing the past)
So, it looks like LiveJournal is mostly back up and running. Once again, it's a massive DDoS attack because of the Russian elections. This Tumblr post is a good background of what's going on. There's also been some support for LiveJournal claiming this is not their fault, etc.

The Russians need their space to share their views just like the rest of us, probably even more than we do, so those blogs should stay up. I don't want them to come down. But while I am all for freedom of speech, I joined LJ nine years ago when it was still being run out of California and was dragged along as collateral because the company chose to sell. I don't want to be involved in their mess.

SUP has a responsibility to its customers in other countries that don't want to be involved in these elections or simply don't know and are confused. It could split the company in two if they really wanted to: Have LJ Russia and LJ World or rebrand the Russian site. Companies do that all the time. From what I can tell, the hackers don't care about Americans, Canadians, Europeans, etc. who use the service. We're just collateral damage. Split all of our blogs off, and keep us out of it.

If they don't want to branch the company, then they need to keep all of its users educated about the circumstances. Supposedly, LiveJournal has taken measures since April to protect accounts, however, you can't find it unless you really dig into SUP's site and then translate the messages from Russian to English. The English customer service side of things hasn't kept us up to date like the Russian side has, which is another issue that needs to be rectified. They have our emails. As soon as a prolonged outage because of the DDoS happened, every site user should have gotten an email explaining what was happening. It needs to be fully disclosed to any new member of the service when they sign up what's going on.

I have no stake in the Russian election, nor do I want one, hence I am dropping my paid support of LiveJournal. We've got enough political woes here at home with both sides of the government acting like bratty kids and putting our fragile economy at risk.
