My very, very, very long week in bullets
It feels like I've lived a year since last Sunday when we got the bulletin that President Obama was going to make an announcement at 10:30 p.m. The best way to summarize it? Bullets!
Sunday:Attended the CGS Super Show and had a blast, meeting several awesome webcomic artists including Danielle Corsetto with "Girls With Slingshots." What began as a slow evening turned into one of the biggest nights of my journalism career, and I might even talk about it more some day. My original page was so close to being done. My front page was picked up and shown around the world. *blush* I gave an interview about it to the Charles Apple visual journalism blog. Do a find on the word "Patriot" and it'll take you to my story.
Monday: I got a lot of praise for the leadership I displayed Sunday night and got reassigned off the front page to organize coverage for four inside pages about local and national reaction to bin Laden. I also didn't eat from 2 p.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Monday except for three mini Hershey bars, a handful of animal crackers and a couple pieces of edamame.
Tuesday: Off day #1. I did a bunch of TUAW work and more Namesake, then my body decided it was time to take revenge on the erratic sleeping and eating schedule I imposed on it. Late that night, my throat became really sore and I got nauseated no matter what I ate.
Wednesday: A repeat of Tuesday. Swap out Namesake writing for writing Doctor Who fanfic.
Thursday: The nausea is now gone, replaced by a stuffed up head. Blasted cold. I am living off copious amounts of tea -- the only thing making my throat feel better -- and soup. Head into work because all the other designers are on vacation and terrorize my boss when I casually mention said throat and nausea. I don't think I've ever seen him move so fast ...
Friday: I feel pretty normal again after 10 hours of sleep. I head out to Barnes and Noble and pick up this huge 180-page notebook from ecojot, which in turn will donate a notebook to a child in need. Organized it into a massive to-do list book. Am at the helm again at the paper, wonder why my Friday nights are always so quiet compared to the guy who normally does A1. Reorganize part of the Namesake site and have awesome Twitter conversations with fellow webcomic writers/artists.
Today: Another 10 hours of sleep, and I think I have this cold pretty much licked. Am hurrying to do laundry and chores so I can shower and get to Free Comic Book Day before work.
Isa and I are starting to discuss the con circuit for Namesake. We agree it's time for both of us to get out there and expose the story more since it's steadily gaining readers and we're getting tremendous feedback from folks. There's other things we plan to do, but the biggest I'll check with her before discussing. As such, I have got to spend a day knocking out the fanbook. I was going to do that this past week, but wound up spending a good bit of it staring glassy-eyed at the laptop while nursing green tea and a cold.
As for bin Laden ... I'm not sure how I feel in the end. I was so busy doing my job that I didn't have quite the chance to process it. I think the best one to summarize how I feel inside, actually, is the Catholic Church: “Osama bin Laden – as we all know – was gravely responsible for promoting division and hatred between peoples, causing the end of countless innocent lives, and of exploiting religions to this end. Faced with the death of a man, a Christian never rejoices, but reflects on the serious responsibility of each and every one of us before God and before man, and hopes and commits himself so that no event be an opportunity for further growth of hatred, but for peace.”
I'm not Catholic, but I do agree with this. The rest of how I feel I'm sure will be sorted out in the days to come.
