After a 3-year hiatus posting on here, I decided to go re-read some of my older Slayers episode reviews I ported over from LiveJournal years ago. And that's when I discovered my account had been suspended.

I apparently won the porn hacking lottery and someone got into my account. They wiped my bio, my icons, my custom status pictures and replaced everything with porn. Niiiiice.

Thankfully, all of my entries are still here. I cleaned out my subscription page of questionable content, and I should be good to go once I get the icons and everything restored. I never closed out my LiveJournal, so hopefully I can pull what I need from it, because I do love my Slayers icons and my status pictures.

So ... how are y'all?

comments

Since the next three and a half months will officially be the longest ever, here’s my rec list of Twelve/River fanfics to read. A good deal of these are M-rated, as we figured the Doctor and River would have a lot of making up to do after 1,000 years on Trenzalore.

Pretty much everything that mygalfriday has penned on the couple, but these three are my diehard favorites:

a photograph you carry like a future in your back pocket: River runs into Twelve and Clara not long after he regenerates. He doesn’t remember who she is.

honey, you’re familiar like my mirror years ago: The Doctor is summoned to a desert planet, where he comes across an amnesiac, post-Library River. He has to help her re-discover who she is.

la petite muse and its sequel, la petite string: Victorian-era AU where Twelve is a bitter, lonely playwright and River is a seamstress that becomes his muse. In this story, Amy and Rory are River’s daughter and son-in-law, and it fits so perfectly. Every note of these two stories are lovely.

And from other folks:

devant, derrière et avant ça by JaneScarlett: This one involves Eleven and Twelve and is just beautifully written. Another reunion fic for the Doctor, and marvelously shows the loopy nature of their timelines.

it’s lost in our embraces like stars against the sun: This fic from amillionmillionvoices is amazing. It’s a somewhat dark fic about River getting captured, and it’s up to Twelve and Clara to unravel a puzzle and save her. This is the third in a series of Twelve/River fics that she wrote, and all three are lovely.

The Engineer and the Magician: This fic by AGirloftheSouth is anoutner post-Library reunion fic for Twelve and River. This one has a really neat twist, utilizing a plot twist I’m normally not a fan of, but it works out really well here.

Empty Tombs by DaraOakwise: River escapes the Library and follows the echoes of Trenzalore across the universe.

Who Knows You By Heart by Kass: Feeling lost after Clara leaves him after “Kill the Moon,” the Doctor finds himself in River Song’s garden.

I’ll begin but I’ll start at the end by goddessdel: Series of one-shot sexy stories featuring Twelve and Mels. They’re awesome.

And these are the Twelve/River fics I’ve written:

Behold the Liquid Thames frozen o’re: Written during series 8, it provides an alternate take on Danny behind inside the TARDIS during the middle of the episode.

The same hearts beneath my fingers: A one-shot written right after Peter Capaldi was cast as the 12th Doctor. A young River encounters her newly regenerated husband.

Betwixt the stars and the unaccomplished fate: The Doctor hadn’t been trying to look for a way to rescue River Song from the Library, but when the opportunity arises, he can’t pass it up. But it comes with a sacrifice. (In-progress)

comments

So the announcement that Alex Kingston will be headlining two new series of Big Finish audios is super huge news for fans of New Who, but seeing River Song (with the 8th Doctor!) stories is the icing of a supremely amazing cake that Big Finish has unveiled over the past few months. This includes other announcements such as:

A new UNIT series featuring Kate Stewart and Osgood

A series featuring Winston Churchill’s encounters with the 9th, 10th, and 11th Doctors

Monsters from New Who battling the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Doctors

New Torchwood dramas with Jack Harkness

This is an excellent place to start with Big Finish! Here’s everything you need to know about Big Finish:

What is Big Finish? It’s a company that’s been releasing Doctor Who audio dramas since 1999. At first, the stories featured just the 5th Doctor, 6th Doctor, 7th Doctor and 8th Doctor. In 2011, the 4th Doctor hopped on board and now there’s several series featuring him.

In addition to the classic Doctors, all but one of the surviving companions from the classic era (and a few now deceased) have participated in a Big Finish story. David Tennant, Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith), Arthur Darvill (Rory Williams) and Bernard Cribbins (Wilf) have appeared in various supporting roles (but not as their on-screen characters). As part of the 50th anniversary, Big Finish released audio stories narrated by Catherine Tate (Donna Noble) and Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald).

Big Finish also has a number of spinoffs featuring the original companions created for its dramas, such as Bernice Summerfield (another kickass time-traveling archaeologist), stories centered just around the companions, an entire 7-series Gallifrey collection featuring Romana, Leela and later-on Ace and more.

Are the stories canon? Your mileage may vary, since Doctor Who’s canon is so debatable but Steven Moffat made at least the Eighth Doctor’s Big Finish adventures canon when he had Eight remember his companions from the audio series during his regeneration. Plus, one Big Finish episode used as the basis of a New Who episode (see recs below) and a lot of the writers for the audio dramas also write for the TV series.

As Moffat was the one to suggest River’s role in the new collections, it’s safe to assume that the River Song audios are part of her story canon.

What are the productions like? They’re fully produced stories, with multiple actors and sound effects. It’s like listening to an audiobook, but better. There are original companions, and they are all amazing. You can get them either via digital download or CD.

Can I try it out before I pre-order? Yes! Here’s the first episode of the first Eighth Doctor series for you to try out.

Click here if you can't see the link on the post itself.

Big Finish also has a collection of free episodes available on SoundCloud.

How much does it cost? Pre-orders are $20 for digital and $31 for audio CD (the Torchwood ones are less). However, Big Finish has frequent sales and is constantly offering various adventures for $5 US for the digital copy and a little bit more for the CD. But if you want to show your support for these series, please pay full price when you can.

There’s so many! Where can I start? This was my problem and kept me from trying Big Finish for years. Personally, I recommend you start with the 8th Doctor. His stories are a lot like New Who stories, and his companions (Lucie Miller, Charley Pollard, etc.) are my favorite. Here’s five stories to start you off:

The Blood of the Daleks: Part 1: This is the first story with the 8th Doctor and Lucie Miller and is very similar in spirit to series 1 of New Who. Fans of Rose Tyler should enjoy Lucie Miller, who reminds me of a cross between Rose and Donna in all the good ways.

Storm Warning: The first story with the Eighth Doctor and Charley Pollard.

Shada: The Eighth Doctor and Romana. How can you not love this? This is the episode that never finished filming because of a TV strike during the 4th Doctor’s era.

Jubilee: This drama was adapted as “Dalek” in series 1 of New Who. It’s one of the best episodes in the Big Finish run and features the 6th Doctor.

The One Doctor: Another stellar outing with the 6th Doctor, and pretty much Colin Baker gets to be the version of the Doctor he was never allowed to be on TV. It’s also received rave reviews and is only $3 to purchase.

Here’s some recs from other people:

Big Finish slushpile masterpost

Eighth Doctor masterpost

Another Eighth Doctor master post

There’s a ton of material out there on Big Finish, so please check it out!

comments

While hunting to double-check a reference for a future page, I ran across a Calliope aside from April 2011, when we were still in book 1 and Calliope wasn’t been seen a lot:

Alice: “I haven’t done anything for FOUR MONTHS.” ARE WE EVEN MAIN CHARACTERS ANYMORE?????

Jack: Awww, Al, it’s not that bad.

Alice: Say you. It’s only been two months since we’ve seen you!

Jack: You know what they say, baby. I drive up the page views. *wink*

Wendy: ALICE. Remember, Jason said no decapitating Jack with the vorpal sword … again.

Alice: Last time didn’t count! It was a clone!

Lemuel: Well, not so much a clone, but a Jack animatronic that I cobbled together. Sure looked realistic, huh?

Jack: I was impressed that you made it anatomically correct … and I’m never going to share a gym locker with you again.

Alice: *fume*

I also found one of the earlier drafts of chapter 1. Isa ordered me to burn it. How can you burn Gmail? Oh well! FIRE. *skips off*

Note: My husband glanced over as I typed that last sentence and went, “Well, that’s not worrying at all.”

comments

Hi, folks! Isa and I wanted to chat with you a little bit today about Comic Rocket.

We have several readers who use this service wonder why Namesake is no longer listed. We don't have anything against Comic Rocket. Isa's been chatting with the folks for several weeks, and they're really nice. However, we've chosen not to be with Comic Rocket because Hiveworks is developing its own reader tools where all the profits go directly to the creators -- in other words, me and Isa and the other artists and writers who work with Hiveworks. Some of those tools include its own mobile app, where the ads on it generate money that go directly to Hiveworks' artists and authors.

Why? Are we being greedy? Things like this always sound like we're being greedy. But, let me clue you guys in on something brewing behind the scenes -- Isa and I are trying to figure out a way for both us to work on comics more. Isa recently took a new job, helping to run Hiveworks, that will give her more time to do art. We also want me to have more time to write Namesake. But to do that, we have to replace part of my income, as I currently work a second job outside of my day job and Namesake to ensure the cats don't murder me and my husband in the middle of the night. Because they will.

We have a ton of comic ideas. I spent several days in Montreal with Isa last week working on Namesake and laying out the groundwork for a couple comics: one is the Chiseri/Adora short story that's the Kickstarter extra and another is a comic scheduled to debut at TCAF next year if we're accepted. We also have a few other planned projects that are being guarded fiercely by both Alices with their swords. We want to do more cons. We love comics, we love telling stories, and we especially love telling those stories together. But, we also need the time to tell those stories, and that's a precious commodity right now because both of us are so busy supporting our families. Thanks to Hiveworks giving us the best ads they can and to them promoting us, they're helping to make a future possible where we can dedicate more of our time to creating comics.

But, we supported a Kickstarter that made a lot money. Doesn't that help you? It sure did. All that money went into the printing and shipping of the books. The Namesake printing costs alone was nearly $22,000, which was 3/4s of the Kickstarter money. All the extra money beyond that is going to creating rewards and shipping the books -- which got a bit more expensive thanks to the post office raising their rates this year. That money wasn't, and was never intended to be, something we actually live off of. Once all the Kickstarters are sent, the money from the remaining books will go to me and Isa.

We love you guys immensely, you all know this. I hope that those who had utilized Comic Rocket to read our comic will continue to do so despite the inconvenience, and none of this was taken with any malicious intent. I love the idea of both them and inkOUTBREAK, where Namesake is still listed. It's nothing personal, both Isa and I just want to be able to afford to keep telling the best stories that we can.

comments

DIY Travel Tea Kit

I also travel quite a bit. You never know when you'll be standing somewhere wanting a nice, hot mug of tea. Or, you'll eat something that messed with your stomach and find yourself rooting through your bag for that packet of chamomile you stashed. Right, you need an emergency tea stash.
There are a few travel tea kits out there. Teavana has one for $25, but that's a bit too expensive and bulky. Then, I came across this blog post. This wonderful lady had created her own travel tea kit by sewing a little boxy pouch from this tutorial. It's little and perfect for tucking into a purse or bookbag.
What you'll need for your travel tea kit:

1 small, boxy pouch (tutorial here)

Tea! These pouches will easily fit two of the 2 oz. Adagio sampler tins or a mix of other items. I have nine pouches of tea (chamomile, hot cinnamon spice, and maple) and an old Adagio sampler tin cleaned and filled with DAVIDsTEA chocolate chili chai.

Travel filters if you have loose-leaf tea. You can find them at your local tea shop or through a place like DAVIDsTEA.

A tiny scoop (optional). If you happen to have a tiny scoop laying about, that'll be perfect. Or, you can use the extra room in your pouch for a small timer, though I use my iPhone for that. Or, just cram in a few more tea pouches if you're going to be away from home for awhile.

( Click to see photos of my kit coming together. )

comments

But, embracing all the gifts he'd been given meant that he had to clean up the messes he made, and that had to start with her.

( You can't start a fire, worrying about your little world falling apart. )

comments

She finds out that these are places she already knows – fantasy and fairy lands made famous through the spoken word, literature and cinema. Her power as a Namesake forces her to act as a protagonist in these familiar stories as she figures out how to get home.

But as she travels, she discovers that those controlling her story have their own selfish goals in mind - and her fate is the key to everyone's happy ending.

If you like, adventure, humor, stories of friendship, fairy tales and fantasy, this is the webcomic for you.

Thank you, thank you!
Everyone has really encouraged me and secondlina on all stages of the comic. Thank you so much to all the folks who volunteered their time to help with what we needed in the planning stages.

Want to help now? Check out the comic. If you like it, talk about it. Word of mouth is always the best advertisement. Use Facebook, Twitter, cardboard signs, shoe polish ... anything!

Blabbering now ...
I was perfectly calm until ... 24 hours ago. Now I have no fingernails left and I think Mike is about ready to Fed-Ex some sort of knockout drug. This isn't like a newspaper, where you do it once a day, put it away and go onto the next project. It's an ongoing commitment that's going to last several years if everything goes right. I'm scared of failing. I'm scared of causing Isa to fail, and I don't ever want to do anything to hurt her. However, it'll be a learning experience for both of us. Isa said, "But I’m also confident that a good story, good art, good support from awesome people and good marketing could make this something great," and I think she's right. I'm looking forward to riding this roller coaster, and I hope you all are too!

comments

Those familiar with it will know it when they see it.

Note: This started off as a one-shot birthday fic for prettio and blew up from there. Like the fact that he'd manage to alienate everyone he knew. And he lost the key to the Tower of Mana ... again. And, most disturbing of all ... he was falling in love with Anna Irving.

Spoiler Alert: This fic is the sequel to "Birthday" and lies in the same universe as it and "Longing." It's not a tale of Kratos springing Anna from the Asgard Ranch. Really, if you want that, there's lots of fics that deal with the subject. I highly recommend "Shifting Destiny" and "Adbertos." This story is meant to be a light-hearted adventure between two adults falling in love, in the days after the escape from the ranch and before Lloyd is born. The title is an homage to Julia Quinn's novels. If you enjoy romance novels, you can't beat hers. They're fantastic and witty.

( Chapter 1: In Which Denial Isn't Just a River, or We Get Acquainted with the Status Quo )

comments

It should make Amelia/Zel fans very happy.

( Part 2 )

comments
